Intercultural Development for Schools: Balancing Small Steps, Long-term Vision, and Moral Commitment

When culture is defined broadly as shared ways of thinking and acting that distinguish one group from another, intercultural development, for individuals and for communities, becomes a necessity for navigating diversity constructively in our world.

In this two-day workshop, participants will explore intercultural development for their schools, through a combination of conceptual learning, case studies, and practical application of tools. Based on research in the field and insights gained through extensive work with international schools around the world, the workshop will guide participants to examine the complex balance of small steps, long-term vision, and moral commitment for sustainable intercultural development.

The workshop combines three components:

1. Moral commitment through the lens of social sustainability, which underpins other forms of sustainability, e.g., environmental, and economic

2. Long-term vision through the lens of quality education, specifically the continuous development of competencies for navigating a complex world where interculturality is the norm

3. Small steps for initiating change through the lens of slight, yet consistent, nudges and transitions in visible school culture, teaching and learning, and community engagement that are potentially effective for intercultural development.

An in-depth case study will be shared by International School Manila, based on its collaboration with Dr Eeqbal Hassim over the last three years. Participants are invited to bring and share their school’s experiences related to one or more of the three specified components. They will build on these experiences to generate ideas for advancing intercultural thinking and practice in their schools. School team registrations (2-3 members) are encouraged.
